Deeper Aspects of Ancestral Movement Workshop – Melbourne, March 18-19

A two day workshop delving further into some of the inner practices of Ancestral Movement. This weekend will focus on the science of mind and body and practices for transforming our embodied sense of self at the deepest levels.

Things we will cover:

NEUROSCIENCE OF BODY AWARENESS:

Body maps, neuroplasticity, pain science, mirror neurons, empathy and nonverbal communication.

AWAKENING THE CENTRAL AXIS:

Spinal freedom and spinal power: safe, simple and incredibly effective exercises for opening up, strengthening and mobilising every individual spinal segment in every possible direction.

Abdominal and chest control: learning to voluntarily contract and relax every part of the pelvic floor and the deep muscles of the abdomen and ribcage.

Directed breathing: the art of focusing the attention and movements of the breath into every part of the torso and every part of the spine. Physiology of the breathing cycle, implications for health, psychology, and physical performance.

AWAKENING THE WHOLE BODY:

Solo and partner exercises which direct movement, effort and attention into all of the deepest hidden areas of the body. Every part of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, the pelvis, all of the ribs and every part of the spine is strengthened and mobilized in every direction, from every angle, affecting all of the body tissues from the skin through the muscles, connective tissues, blood vessels and lymphatic system, the nerves, organs, and bones.

EVOLUTIONARY ANATOMY & MOVEMENT:

Ancient patterns of anatomy and of movement that we have in common with other primates, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, fish, and even worms. Helping us develop more of the strength, agility, and resilience of our animal cousins and human ancestors and to feel ourselves as ancient and miraculous beings, fully at home on the earth.

MOVEMENT & CULTURE:

Posture, gesture, breathing and voice, feedback loops between the body and the brain. Contact and spatial awareness. Forbidden movements and inhibition of movement.

Humans as mimics. Emotional contagion and entrainment. Interspecies empathy, mimicry and tracking. Cultures of embodiment and our sense of connection with the rest of the natural world.

PSYCHONEUROIMMUNOLOGY:

Effects of different emotions, mind states, postures, movements, and breathing patterns on the nervous, cardio-vascular, endocrine, and immune systems.

USE OF THE MIND AND IMAGINATION IN PHYSICAL PRACTICE:

Attention, awareness, cultivating emotions and active imagination. Myth, memory and symbols: filling the body with stories. Songlines, magic, and the ancient art of memory. Body as landscape, landscape as body. Re-enchantment of the body and the world.

QIGONG:

A modified version of the “Hun Yuan Qigong” set originally taught by Feng Zhi Qiang, as a perfect example of supercharging or “layering” mind-body practice to contain all of the concepts described above.

A two day, outdoor workshop exploring aspects of natural human movement in different environments.

Things we will focus on in this workshop:

WHOLE-BODY AWARENESS, THREE DIMENSIONAL MOBILITY, AND FLUID STRENGTH:

Simple but challenging exercises which direct movement, effort and attention into all of the deepest hidden areas of the body. Every part of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, the pelvis, all of the ribs and every part of the spine are strengthened and mobilized in every direction, from every angle, affecting all of the body tissues from the skin through the muscles, connective tissues, blood vessels and lymphatic system, the nerves, organs, and bones. We will briefly cover the fundamentals of modern pain science, the practical neuroscience of body awareness, and their applications to chronic pain conditions, injury rehabilitation and all forms of physical training.

MOVEMENT FREEDOM:

The ability to smoothly and easily get up and down from the ground in as many ways as possible, and to move smoothly and easily from any position to any other position (supine, prone, sitting, kneeling, all fours, squatting, standing) in any direction.

FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENTS:

Rolling, reaching, crawling, stepping, bouncing, jumping, falling, cartwheels, balancing, hanging, swinging, climbing, etc. Various kinds of animal crawls and locomotor patterns (pacing, trotting, galloping, bounding etc.)

JUNGLE GYM:

Using trees, rails, fences, steps, and playground equipment to practice fundamental movements, locomotor patterns and games, and including simple but intensely effective strength training, accessible to anyone of any fitness level, using the natural movement patterns of primates and other animals on the jungle gym (balancing, “cat balance”, “sloth hanging”, “koala climbing”, “gibbon swings” and more).

PARTNER WORK:

Moving with or around another person, with varying levels of distance, contact, speed, cooperation and resistance. Sensitivity drills, pressure drills, games for stimulating creativity, agility and problem-solving, and wrestling.

RETREAT!

Retreat is happening again! Summer, Saturday January 28 through to the following Sunday February 4th. Everyone is welcome to come for whichever days they are able, for at least two nights (sorry, no single-day visits! Too much coming and going disrupts the flow with all of the hellos and goodbyes).

As usual there will be no fixed program or schedule but over the nine days we’ll get up to all sorts of things:

Many kinds of movement practice: jungle gym training, parkour basics, dance and acrobatics, contact improvisation, capoeira, wrestling, many kinds of martial arts, deep explorations of the anatomy and the many physical skills which come from it, animal mimicry, natural strength training and rehabilitative exercise.

Meditation or sensory awareness practices: from Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, European and various Indigenous traditions and modern methods, and –

Things from the broad field of “bushcraft”, “primitive skills”, “rewilding” and “nature connection”: things like basketry, making fire with friction, flint knapping, rope making, pottery, hide tanning and leatherworking, learning edible and medicinal plants and plant identification generally, bird language, animal tracking and stalking, natural camouflage, traditional cooking methods, spear throwing, and archery.

A good amount of chilling out! Cooking around the fire, exploring the beautiful bush, swimming in the river, soaking in the fire bath, reading books from the retreat library, hanging out and having the time for long in depth conversations with wonderful interesting people. Everyone is invited to share their skills and knowledge, and to teach things that they may have only just learned, so we have a strong culture of sharing and mentoring and constant “mini-workshops” happening spontaneously each day.

The cost is $150 per day, with concessions and payment plans available for anyone who requires them – it is important to us that these retreats stay accessible to all kinds of people, so if it feels like the price is outside your range but you would still really love to come, please get in touch.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, send me an email at simon.thakur@gmail.com or call or text (I’m out of range a lot of the time these days) to 0431 166 737.

Check the RETREATS AND WORKSHOPS page for more information and contact details, the PHOTOS page, for photos, or check out the Facebook event HERE
